Alexandra Barrage, a partner in Troutman Pepper’s Corporate Practice Group, was quoted in the July 10, 2024 Law360 article, “Pledging ‘Accountability,’ Biden’s FDIC Pick Faces Senate Test.”

“She’s going to get lots of questions about her banking experience, her bank regulatory experience and her leadership and management experience,” said Alexandra Steinberg Barrage, a Troutman Pepper financial services partner and former FDIC senior official. “I think those are the questions that are on most people’s minds … She doesn’t have the typical legislative or even bank supervisory experience.”

“What is the FDIC’s role in fostering responsible innovation? That’s where I think she would have some really interesting views,” Troutman’s Barrage said, noting that Goldsmith Romero helped reinvigorate a tech-focused advisory committee at the CFTC and would be in a position to do something similar at the FDIC, which has been accused of technophobic tendencies under Gruenberg.

“She should be ready to explain what steps she can implement, because in many respects, her biggest challenge starting out won’t necessarily be regulation or enforcement,” Barrage said. “It will be restoring the trust of staff and restoring the reputation of the agency.”

“Those are equally important priorities,” Barrage added. “Maybe it doesn’t get as much public attention, but it’s super important.”
