What Caused the ProPark Mobility Data Breach?

The ProPark Mobility data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, ProPark’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on January 18, 2024, ProPark was made aware of a data security incident involving the company’s IT network. In response, ProPark blocked the unauthorized access and then enlisted the help of outside cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident. ProPark also notified law enforcement.

Ultimately, the ProPark investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access—and potentially remove—certain data that was stored on its computer network. The period of unauthorized access is believed to be between January 15, 2024 and January 18, 2024.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, ProPark Mobility reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On September 3, 2024, ProPark Mobility sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. While the letter available on the California Attorney General's website does not list the specific data types that were leaked, the personalized data breach letters that were recently sent out should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
