What Caused the Prospect Medical Holdings Data Breach?

The Prospect Medical Holdings data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Prospect Medical’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, one of Prospect Medical’s subsidiaries provides administrative services for healthcare providers that contract with Prudential Insurance. On August 1, 2023, Prospect detected unusual activity within its IT network. In response, Prospect contained the incident by taking its systems offline before launching an investigation.

The Prospect investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed Prospect’s IT network between July 31, 2023 and August 3, 2023. During this time, the unauthorized actor accessed and acquired files containing confidential information belonging to members of certain Prudential health plans. On September 29, 2023, Prospect notified Prudential of the data security incident. Note, the incident did not involve hackers gaining access to Prudential’s computer network, as any leaked information was obtained from Prospect Medical’s network.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Prospect Medical Holdings reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, address, date of birth, medical information, health insurance information, and financial information.

On November 28, 2023, Prospect Medical Holdings sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
