Fish & Richardson joined more than 45 law firms to form the PTAB Bar Association, which officially launched on September 16, 2016. The first national bar association of its kind to form in more than 30 years, the PTAB Bar Association intends to establish best practices for the unique practice and skills required before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Additionally, the PTAB Bar Association will provide a forum for communications between the legal community and PTAB officials and its Administrative Patent Judges (APJs).
The Association will also coordinate many other important functions, such as PTAB-centric continuing legal education, pro bono opportunities, career enhancement and scholarship activities. The Inaugural Conference is being planned for March 2017 in Washington, DC.
Fish’s Karl Renner, Co-Chair of the firm’s Post-Grant practice, has been elected to serve as an interim director of the Association. A “driving force behind the group’s PTAB activity” (IAM Patent 1000), Karl is one of the most active attorneys practicing before the PTAB.
