What Caused the Radiological Society of North America Data Breach?

The Radiological Society of North America data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, RSNA’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on June 25, 2024, RSNA determined that the organization was the target of a cyberattack, resulting in an unauthorized party gaining access to its computer network.

In response, RSNA secured its network and then launched an investigation to learn more about the incident and any impact on the confidential information in the organization’s possession. Ultimately, the RSNA investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access portions of its network containing 1099 forms. The period of unauthorized access is believed to have been between June 20, 2024 and June 26, 2024.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, the Radiological Society of North America reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. RSNA completed this process on July 26, 2024. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On August 28, 2024, the Radiological Society of North America sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
