Through centralization models, you are also able to automate repetitive tasks to free-up time for internal resources to focus on more high-value work. By eliminating remedial tasks through automation, you allow your support staff to think more strategically and bring more value to the table, this not only enhances efficiency but also improves job satisfaction and retention.

Theme Two: Data-driven decision making is key to successful outcomes.

The importance of using business analytics and data surrounding your operational strategies now is key in developing creative strategies, gaining internal stakeholder buy-in, and monitoring successful outcomes. For example, if firms are moving away the traditional ratio model and resourcing support differently, how do you begin to build a business case for a different model? Typically, you have more data at your fingertips than you expect. One path could include importing HR data from tools like Workday into business analytics platforms to break down and visualize how current ratios are supporting teams, costs associated, as well as gaps and/or opportunity. This transparency drives accountability, cost savings, and streamlined processes.

Theme Three: Hoteling and real estate strategies can be fluid.

Firms are still using occupancy patterns to determine how to approach their real estate strategy in different markets. Because needs could shift in 4-5 years, some first are subleasing property as an alternative to letting to real estate go while they evaluate their long-term strategy. Prioritizing space in growth markets or where practice groups are is important, and this allows you to align both of those components. Additionally, some firms are leasing WeWork space in markets that they have populations who still want to meet in-person regularly, and this approach reduces overhead but allows you to enable collaboration.

Theme Four: Embracing artificial intelligence (AI) and automation is ushering in a new era for law firms.

The implications of AI and automation in law firm operations are a major focus for law firms. Microsoft Workplace Solutions leaders predict 10-15% less work per worker with operational enhancements due to AI. Additionally, while AI continues to be an important topic in the marketplace, it’s important to not overlook actionable ways that AI can enhance law firm operations. Areas of potential impact include creating and executing upon staffing models, document creation, process automation, etc.
