Governor Gavin Newsom said on April 25 that California continued to rapidly add the battery storage that is crucial to the transition to cleaner energy, but admitted it was still not enough to avoid blackouts during heat waves. Standing in the middle of a solar farm in Yolo County, Newsom announced the state now had battery storage systems with the capacity of more than 10,000 MW — about 20% of the 52,000 MW the state says is needed to meet its climate goals.
New Jersey is seeking a new round of proposals to build wind energy farms off its coastline, forging ahead with its clean energy goals even as local opposition and challenging economics create blowback to the effort. The state Board of Public Utilities on April 30 opened a fourth round of solicitations for offshore wind farms, giving interested companies until July 10 to submit proposals. There are currently three preliminarily approved offshore wind projects in New Jersey.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS issued final rules on April 25 for the tax credit transferability mechanism included in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), offering clarity to the already active tax credit market. The transferability provision allows businesses to transfer “all or a portion of any of” 11 clean energy tax credits to a third party in exchange for tax-free cash, Treasury said, “so that businesses can take advantage of tax incentives if they do not have sufficient tax liability to fully utilize the credits themselves.”
Startups within the fast-growing geothermal industry are developing next-generation solutions to produce “clean, firm” electricity in geographic locations that conventional geothermal technologies can’t access. Other companies are innovating on a relatively smaller scale to make it easier and more affordable to decarbonize homes and buildings. Meanwhile, states like Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and New York are rolling out underground thermal networks, which service buildings much like fossil-gas pipelines do.
The 680 MW Nova Power Bank battery storage facility taking shape in Menifee will link renewable energy produced in off-peak windows with electric utilities in need of peak-hour juice. Billed as one of the largest facilities of its kind in the nation, Nova, which broke around in August at the site of what used to be a natural gas power plant, is expected to be finished in 2025. By then, Nova’s roughly 1,200 batteries spread over 43 acres will store enough electricity to power 680,000 homes for up to four hours.
A Shasta County Superior Court judge has ruled that a judge from outside of the area will preside over a lawsuit filed against the proposed Fountain Wind Project. The California Attorney General’s Office had objected to having a lawsuit filed against the California Energy Commission heard in Shasta County because of possible prejudice against the commission, which decided to consider approving the project after it was voted down by the county Board of Supervisors.
The Anaheim Transportation Network, the transit agency that runs buses in the city’s resort district, on April 26 opened the first-of-its-kind, solar-powered charging facility in the county to power its fleet of battery electric buses and vans. The charging hub expands the agency’s ability to charge its electric vehicles as its leaders plan to buy more in the coming years.
Longroad has cut the ribbon at its giant Longroad Sun Streams Complex in Maricopa County, Arizona. When complete, the site will include over 950 MW of solar and 500 MWh of storage.
Energy Vault and NV Energy have started commercial operation of the Reid Gardner BESS in Moapa, Nevada. This development marks a significant step in energy storage solutions as the 220 MW/440 MWh grid-tied BESS is one of the largest in the state.
