What Caused the Rusnak Auto Group Data Breach?

The Rusnak Auto Group data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Rusnak’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, Rusnak recently learned of a possible data security incident. In response, Rusnak secured its systems and then began working with third-party cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident.

The Rusnak investigation confirmed that there was unauthorized access to its network between June 13, 2023, and June 16, 2023. It was later determined that some of the files that were subject to unauthorized access contained confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Rusnak Auto Group reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Rusnak completed this process on September 29, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On November 16, 2023, Rusnak Auto Group sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
