On August 7, the Russian Federation instituted a ban on the importation of most food products from Australia, the United States, the European Union, and Norway. The suspension of imports of meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, and milk products has been widely viewed as retaliation against the United States and the European Union for imposing sanctions on Russia for its involvement in Ukraine. In Russia, the food measures have reportedly increased food prices. While the Russian food ban is predicted to have an "insignificant" impact on the U.S. economy, there is concern that the economic impact may be more severe for certain EU member nations. The European Union has moved to compensate farmers for produce banned by Russia to offset potential damage to its agriculture sector.
