What Caused the Service Access & Management Data Breach?

The Service Access & Management data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, SAM’s filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides some important information on what led up to the breach. SAM also posted a website notice describing the incident and the company’s response.

According to these sources, on July 5, 2024, SAM detected unusual activity within its IT network. In response, SAM launched an investigation with the help of independent computer forensic experts. Ultimately, this investigation confirmed that an unauthorized actor gained access to SAM’s computer system for a period of time. It was also determined that the unauthorized party may have been able to access files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Service Access & Management reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. SAM completed this process on July 29, 2024. While the SAM’s website notice doesn’t specifically list the leaked information, the company noted that, “[i]f an individual’s Social Security number was affected, credit monitoring and identity restoration services will be provided at no cost,” implying that Social Security numbers were among the compromised information.

Service Access & Management will soon be sending out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
