What Caused the Sightpath Medical Breach?

The Sightpath Medical data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Sightpath’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, Sightpath acts as a vendor to various other companies, including Sutter North Surgery Center. Specifically, Sightpath provides specialized laser and cataract equipment.

On February 9, 2022, Sightpath detected unusual activity within its computer network. In response, Sightpath secured its systems and then began working with third-party data security specialists to assist with the company’s investigation.

Ultimately, the Sightpath investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access files on its IT network and that some of these files contained confidential patient information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Sightpath Medical reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Sightpath completed this process on June 14, 2023.

On September 8, 2023, Sightpath Medical sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
