What Caused the Sirius Federal Data Breach?

The Sirius Federal data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Sirius Federal’s filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on August 2, 2023, Sirius Federal detected unusual activity within its IT network. In response, Sirius Federal secured its systems and then began working with third-party data security specialists to investigate the incident.

Ultimately, the Sirius Federal investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party had gained access to its IT environment between July 31, 2023, and August 2, 2023, including files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Sirius Federal reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Sirius Federal completed this process on December 20, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, Social Security number, individual taxpayer identification number, date of birth, health insurance information, medical information, and other government-issued identification numbers.

On January 19, 2024, Sirius Federal sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
