What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Smoothie King?

The Smoothie King data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. Unfortunately, Smoothie King does not appear to have posted a website notice explaining the incident, and the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides only information on what led up to the breach.

However, we do know that the incident involved an unauthorized party gaining access to information that consumers and/or employees had provided to the company. However, based on the nature of Smoothie King’s business and the data types involved, it appears likely that this impacted employees. What we don’t know is if hackers were able to access the information from Smoothie King’s own computer network or whether the incident stemmed from a cyberattack against one of the company’s vendors.

Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Smoothie King reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, Social Security number, driver’s license number, financial information, medical information and health insurance information.

On October 31, 2023, Smoothie King sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
