What Caused the Sono Bello Data Breach?

The Sono Bello data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Sonobello’s filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, Sono Bello recently learned that an unauthorized party was able to access one employee’s email account between the dates of May 14, 2024 and May 16, 2024.

In response, Sono Bello secured the affected email account and then launched an investigation with the help of outside cybersecurity professionals. Through this investigation, on August 21, 2024, Sono Bello confirmed that the affected email account contained confidential information belonging to certain individuals. Sono Bello notes that, beyond access to the employee’s email account, there was no other compromise of the company’s IT network.

After learning that sensitive data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Sono Bello reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and who was impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On September 11, 2024, Sono Bello sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
