A pilot project by Republic Solar Highways proposes to bring solar panels to previously unused Caltrans interchanges along US Highway 101 in California. These systems will be located specifically within state, county and city owned roadway systems that have little to no commercial value. Republic Solar Highways currently has proposalsfor seven interchanges. The Solar Highway will utilize 65 acres of property to offset 15,500 metric tons of carbon per year with a 15 megawatt solar collection system. Power collected will be used by PG&E throughout northern California. The seven interchanges are located between Gilroy and San Jose. The land is currently unused and unleasable but will now become a revenue generating asset for the state. The project is in the beginning stages of its vetting process. The first community meeting was held in November. Over the next several months there will be opportunities for the public to provide its feedback on the proposal.
