More weed, and more money!

Yesterday, I posted about the impact of the midterm elections on federal labor and employment law. 

But, of course, there were also state initiatives that will affect labor and employment. My law partner Bob Ortbals had a post yesterday about Missouri's increase in the minimum wage. Here are the other initiatives of which employers should be aware:

Legal marijuana

Michigan. Michiganders voted on Tuesday to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. According to MSN, Michigan is the 10th state in the Union to do so, and the first Midwestern state.

Missouri and Utah. Missouri and Utah voters have approved initiatives to legalize the use of medical marijuana.

North Dakota. Voters in North Dakota rejected an initiative to legalize recreational use of marijuana.

Minimum wage

Arkansas. Arkansas voters approved an initiative to gradually increase the state minimum wage from its current $8.50 an hour to $11 an hour. The increase will be phased as follows:

January 1, 2019: $9.25 an hour

January 1, 2020: $10 an hour

January 1, 2021: $11 an hour
