Justice Stephen Breyer officially retired from active service on the U.S. Supreme Court as of noon on June 30, 2022.
As covered in The Road to the U.S. Supreme Court series, Justice Breyer previously announced his intent to retire at the close of the Court’s current term, which ended the morning of June 30.
The Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson, who was nominated in February and confirmed on April 7, 2022, was sworn June 30, 2022, at noon, as the 104th Associate Justice of the Court. She is the first Black woman and the third Black Justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
