However, Talus Pay’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on May 16, 2023, Talus Pay identified suspicious activity within an employee’s email account. In response, Talus Pay took the necessary steps to secure the employee’s email account, notified state regulators, and then began working with third-party data security specialists to investigate the incident.

The Talus Pay investigation confirmed that an unauthorized actor was able to access several employee email accounts between May 2, 2023, and May 16, 2023. It was also determined that the unauthorized actor was able to access—and potentially acquire—confidential consumer data located within the affected email accounts.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Talus Pay reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On December 14, 2023, Talus Pay sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident.
