A subsidiary of Eurofins Scientific, empowerDX, is marketing an at home PFAS blood test. The blood testing purports to screen for “40+ different PFAS chemicals.” The company is currently marketing its testing kits to individuals who fall within ten identified categories, including “active or retired firefighter(s),” people who “have been exposed to firefighting foam,” individuals who “work or worked at a manufacturing facility that utilizes fluorinated chemistries,” residents who “live or lived near an industrial complex,” consumers who “consistently use or used consumer products such as nonstick cookware, cosmetics, or water repellent gear,” and people who “eat a lot of carry out or fast food.” The accuracy of the at-home test is not clear at this time, but the opportunity to obtain individualized testing results will likely lead to a continued increase in attention on PFAS issues.
