Texas Sales Tax Compliance Update. Texas businesses are required to report and remit their Texas sales tax collections by the 20th day of the calendar month following the month in which the collections are made.  To date, the Texas Comptroller has not agreed to waive or delay these filing deadlines.  On March 25, though, the agency released the following statement:

“The Texas agency is here to offer assistance to those businesses that are struggling to pay the full amount of sales taxes they collected in February.
For businesses that find themselves in this situation, our agency is offering assistance in the form of short-term payment agreements and, in most instances, waivers of penalties and interest.
We ask that you contact our Enforcement Hotline at 800-252-8880 to learn about your options for remaining in compliance and avoiding interest and late fees on taxes due. . .”

Taxpayers need to understand that sales tax collections are made in trust on behalf of the State, and every effort should be made to stay in compliance with sales tax remittances, but reaching out to the Comptroller and negotiating an agreement with the Comptroller in advance of a late payment by utilizing the Hotline described above may buy a little time for compliance.
