What Caused the Texas Medical Liability Trust Breach?

The Texas Medical Liability Trust data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, TMLT’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, TMLT has confidential information belonging to certain individuals related to claim services TMLT provides for medical malpractice insurance claims.

On October 12, 2022, TMLT detected suspicious activity within its computer environment. In response, TMLT secured its network and then retained help from third-party data security specialists to investigate the incident.

Through its investigation, TMLT confirmed that an unauthorized actor may have gained access to its systems between October 2, 2022 and October 13, 2022. As a result of this access, the unauthorized party may have accessed or acquired confidential information belonging to certain consumers.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Texas Medical Liability Trust reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, government-issued identification number, financial account information, medical treatment and diagnosis information, and health insurance information.

On September 11, 2023, Texas Medical Liability Trust sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
