What Caused the Association of California School Administrators Data Breach?

The Association of California School Administrators data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, ACSA’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on September 24, 2023, ACSA detected unusual activity within its computer network involving the encryption of certain files. In response, ACSA launched an investigation to learn more about the incident and what, if any, consumer data was compromised as a result.

The ACSA investigation ultimately confirmed that an unauthorized party had gained access to the organization’s computer network between September 23, 2023 and September 24, 2024, including files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, the Association of California School Administrators reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. ACSA completed this process on May 3, 2024. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, Social Security number, employer-assigned identification number, and online account credentials.

On May 22, 2024, the Association of California School Administrators sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
