What Caused the Bank of Canton Vendor Data Breach?

The Bank of Canton vendor data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Bank of Canton’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on August 3, 2023, one of the Bank of Canton’s vendors informed the Bank of Canton of a data breach involving the file-transfer application MOVEit. The vendor, which goes unnamed but is referred to as “a major, publicly traded company which serves thousands of businesses in the financial industry,” explained that the breach stemmed from a period of unauthorized access to the company’s MOVEit server on approximately May 27, 2023.

In response, the Bank of Canton worked with its vendor to identify the scope of the breach, ultimately confirming that certain Bank of Canton customers' personal information was among the information that was subject to unauthorized access.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, the Bank of Canton reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. The Bank of Canton completed this process on September 22, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number and account numbers.

On October 23, 2023, the Bank of Canton sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
