The District of Columbia’s Wage Theft Prevention Amendment Act of 2014 (2014 WTPAA) went into effect on February 26, 2015, after completing congressional review. In an effort to promote compliance with the 2014 WTPAA, the D.C. Department of Employment Services (DOES) released some guidance for employees and employers. In particular, the Labor Standards Bureau of DOES issued a notice of the 2014 WTPAA that explains the new law and educates employers and employees of its contents. Also, DOES has provided a template of a Notice of Hire — Employment Status and Acknowledgement of Wage Rates with instructions; it is only in English at this time.

As part of an effort to educate employers and employees about the 2014 WTPAA, the DOES Office of Wage-Hour will conduct webinars on two days this month, twice on March 12 and twice on March 26. DOES is updating its website with recent developments on the 2014 WTPAA on a regular basis.

Finally, as explained in our last blog post on the 2014 WTPAA, the District of Columbia Council has passed emergency and temporary measures to modify the 2014 WTPAA. These are the 2014 WTPAA’s two emergency bills: the Wage Theft Prevention Correction and Clarification Emergency Amendment Act of 2014 and the Wage Theft Prevention Clarification Emergency Amendment Act of 2015. Neither of these bills have passed as of yet.
