The IRS extension deadline is in one week, Tuesday, October 15, 2024. This is the last date for most U.S. taxpayers with extensions to file their 2023 federal income tax return without incurring late filing fees and other penalties.

This year there are many exceptions. The weather has presented one of the most challenging years on record for the United States. Those who reside (who have an IRS "address of record") in disaster areas identified by declarations of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), as well as U.S. taxpayers in Israel and other combat zones may have extra time to file. It is important to check in with your tax attorney to verify these locations and qualifications.

For example, storm damage has extended the IRS extension deadline to November 1, 2024 for some residents of Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia. Many taxpayers in other parts of Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, the Virgin Islands and the State of Washington have been given until February 3, 2025 to submit their 2023 federal tax returns.

Recent Hurricane Helene destroyed the homes and lives of many in in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Those affected have until May 1 of 2025 to file their 2023 IRS federal tax returns.

This year has brought substantial weather-related challenges to almost every state in the union. We have all been horrified by the images and video of storm victims as another major hurricane prepares to approach the western Florida coastline. Our thoughts continuously go out to those affected. The IRS and state tax agencies have provided some relief for many taxpayers in the form of deadline extensions.

There may be substantial deductions that will affect this year's tax return and those of several years yet to come. This is why it is important to reach out to an experienced, proven tax attorney who can provide insight, sound advice and counsel for your unique situation.

It is important, in the midst of all of life's challenges, to maintain an awareness of our responsibilities as U.S. citizens and U.S. expatriates to file federal, state and local income tax returns. Many U.S. taxpayers who have requested an extension have one week to complete their 2023 IRS federal income tax filing on October 15, 2024. Those affected by storms and unrest in the Middle East have tax filing extensions beyond next week.
