On July 20, 2023, The Mission Essential Group (“MEG”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after discovering that certain MEG email accounts may have been accessed by an unauthorized party. In this notice, MEG explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party that may have been able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names and Social Security numbers. Upon completing its investigation, MEG began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from The Mission Essential Group, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. While MEG was unable to confirm that confidential data was leaked, this is not an uncommon finding following a data security incident. Thus, those in receipt of a breach letter from MEG describing a potential data breach should take the necessary precautions to protect themselves. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft as well as discuss your legal options following the potential Mission Essential data breach. What Caused the Potential Mission Essential Breach?

The Mission Essential data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, MEG’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, in September 2022, MEG was informed by federal law enforcement authorities about a potential incident in which certain email accounts were subject to unauthorized access.

In response, MEG launched an investigation with the assistance of cybersecurity experts. Mission Group’s investigation was unable to confirm the reports of law enforcement officials; however, the company decided to inform potentially affected parties out of an abundance of caution.

After learning that sensitive consumer data may have been accessible to an unauthorized party, Mission Essential reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. MEG completed this process on April 19, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On July 20, 2023, Mission Essential sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of which information of theirs was compromised.
