Below is the Federal Policy team’s weekly preview, published each week when Congress is in session.

HEADLINES

• President Donald Trump will travel to Vietnam for his second meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

• Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney, will testify before three different congressional committees this week.

• Pharmaceutical executives will be grilled by the Senate Finance Committee, as pressure on the industry over drug prices continues to intensify.

HOUSE

  • The House is in session today through Thursday. The agenda is highlighted by legislation aiming to block Trump’s declaration of an emergency at the southern border.
  • The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection on Tuesday will hold a hearing on “Protecting Consumer Privacy in the Era of Big Data.”
  • S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Wednesday will testify before the House Ways and Means Committee regarding U.S.-China trade, as the world’s two economic superpowers appear to be working to ratchet down trade tensions.

SENATE

  • The Senate is in session throughout the week. The agenda begins with legislation aiming to protect newborns who survive abortion attempts, following recent controversial actions in Virginia and New York regarding late-term abortions. The Senate plans to then turn to votes on several Trump nominees, including Andrew Wheeler to be EPA administrator.
  • Top executives from seven of the world’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers on Tuesday will appear before the Senate Finance Committee expecting to face sharp criticism from senators over prescription drug prices.
  • The Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday will hold a hearing on “Policy Principles for a Federal Data Privacy Framework in the United States.”

WHITE HOUSE

  • Trump is meeting with governors today as they conclude the National Governors Association Winter Meeting.
  • Trump will be in Hanoi, Vietnam, meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un on Thursday.
  • Vice President Mike Pence is traveling to South America to support Juan Guaido, whom the United States and most of Europe and South America recognize as Venezuela’s interim president amid the country’s ongoing political crisis.
