Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • The congressional committee schedule is highlighted by foreign affairs, as Congress returns from recess following the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • President Joe Biden will meet with the Democratic caucuses in both chambers.
  • Later in the week, Biden will host German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the White House for the first time since just before the Russian invasion.

HOUSE

  • The House is in session today through Wednesday, with an agenda including a resolution to nullify the Labor Department’s proposal to encourage environmental, social and governance investing in employer-sponsored retirement plans.
  • Tomorrow, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on “Combatting the Generational Challenge of CCP Aggression,” and the new Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party will hold its first hearing in primetime.
  • The Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce will hold a hearing Wednesday on a national data privacy standard.

SENATE

  • The Senate will resume votes on Biden’s judicial nominees.
  • The Senate Armed Services Committee tomorrow will receive testimony on the war in Ukraine following the anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
  • Wednesday, the Commerce Committee will hold a nomination hearing with Phil Washington, Biden’s nominee to lead the Federal Aviation Administration.

WHITE HOUSE

  • The president will visit Virginia Beach tomorrow to discuss healthcare.
  • Biden on Wednesday will speak at House Democrats’ retreat in Baltimore, and will visit Senate Democrats at lunch Thursday.

Scholz will meet with Biden at the White House Friday.
