Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • Congress returns from its long summer recess with an agenda centered on keeping the government funded beyond the end of the fiscal year, September 30.
  • President Joe Biden will commemorate 9/11 and host a bilateral meeting with the British prime minister.
  • Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will debate on ABC tomorrow night.

HOUSE

  • The House will hold floor votes tonight through Thursday, taking up several bills aimed at countering the Chinese Communist Party, plus House Republicans’ initial proposal to keep the government funded until March 28.
  • The Financial Services Committee tomorrow will hold a hearing to scrutinize environmental, social, and governance standards in investing.
  • Wednesday, the House Administration Committee will hold a hearing on Americans’ confidence in elections.

SENATE

  • The Senate will be in session throughout the week.
  • The Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Thursday will hold a hearing regarding the Energy Department’s role in advanced computing research.
  • Also Thursday, the Finance Committee will hold a hearing looking ahead to the 2025 tax policy debate.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Today at the White House, Biden will celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act and Disability Pride Month.
  • Wednesday, the president will commemorate 9/11 in New York, in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon.
  • Friday, he will host a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom.
