What Caused the TransUnion Risk and Alternative Data Solutions Data Breach?

The TransUnion Risk and Alternative Data Solutions data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, TRADS’s filing with the Attorney Generals of Vermont and Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, TRADS recently detected unusual activity within its computer network. Specifically, TRADS detected related attempts to access files and accounts for certain TransUnion products.

In response, on July 24, 2024, TRADS launched an investigation to learn more about the incident and what, if any, consumer data may have been compromised. On September 10, 2024, the TRADS investigation concluded that an unauthorized party was able to access certain products, which gave the unauthorized party access to confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, TransUnion Risk and Alternative Data Solutions reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number and date of birth.

On October 2, 2024, TransUnion Risk and Alternative Data Solutions sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of the information that was compromised.
