What Caused the TRISTAR Insurance Data Breach?

The TRISTAR Insurance data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, TRISTAR’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, TRISTAR is a third-party insurance claims administrator, managing claims on behalf of insurance companies.

On November 10, 2022, TRISTAR detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, TRISTAR launched an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity specialists.

Through this investigation, TRISTAR determined that an unauthorized party was able to access the company’s email system starting on November 4, 2022, which they used to gain access to the TRISTAR network on November 9, 2022. TRISTAR also concluded that the unauthorized party removed certain confidential information from its computer network.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, TRISTAR Insurance reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On February 1, 2024, TRISTAR Insurance sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
