On June 9, 2023, the Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga Board of Cooperative Educational Services, better known as TST BOCES (“TST”), filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after learning about a data security incident that leaked the personal information of over 11,000 individuals. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, Social Security numbers and financial account information used for direct deposit. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, TST began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the TST BOCES Breach

News of the TST BOCES data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine. According to this source, TST recently fell victim to what the organization feared was a cyberattack. In response, TST secured its systems and then launched an investigation with the assistance of a third-party cybersecurity firm.

The TST investigation confirmed that an unauthorized actor was able to obtain access to the organization’s computer system on April 2, 2023. Then, on April 8, 2023, it was determined that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential consumer information.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, TST BOCES began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. TST completed this process on April 26, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number and financial account information used for direct deposit.

On June 9, 2023, TST BOCES sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
