Back in March 2023, Group 1001 posted a notice on its website announcing that the company experienced a ransomware attack. Subsequently, two Group 1001 subsidiaries have filed a notice of data breach. These notices explain that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. Upon completing its investigation, Group 1001 began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the Group 1001 Breach?

The Group 1001 data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Group 1001’s Resources’ filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on February 9, 2023, Group 1001 was alerted to a possible ransomware attack. In response, Group 1001 isolated and secured its system and then launched an investigation into the incident.

The Group 1001 investigation confirmed that hackers were able to access and remove certain files from the company’s computer network. It was later determined that some of these files contained confidential information related to certain employees as well as customers of First Security Benefit Life Insurance and Annuity Company.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Group 1001 reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. This process was completed on July 10, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number.

One of Group 1001’s subsidiaries, Clear Spring Life and Annuity Company, also filed a notice of data breach with the Maine Attorney General on July 27, 2023. In this letter, the company indicates that the breach affected customers of First Security Benefit Life Insurance and Annuity Company. Specifically, their names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and contract/policy numbers.
