What Caused the UMC Health Data Breach?

The UMC Health data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, UMC Health’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides some important information on what led up to the breach. UMC also posted a website notice discussing the incident.

According to these sources, on July 26, 2023, UMC detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, UMC secured its systems and then began working with outside cybersecurity specialists to assist with its investigation.

On September 2, 2023, the UMC investigation determined that the cyberattack may have compromised patient information. As a result, UMC conducted further investigation, ultimately confirming that to be the case.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, UMC Health reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, date of birth, mailing address, Social Security number, diagnosis and treatment information, and health insurance information.

On October 27, 2023, UMC Health sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
