What We Know So Far About the Umpqua Bank Breach

News of the Umpqua Bank data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from a company spokesperson’s comments to various news outlets. Evidently, on or around June 19, 2023, an Umpqua Bank representative told reporters that the company was “one of many government agencies, large corporations and other enterprises globally affected by the MOVEit file transfer vulnerability.”

After learning about the incident, Umpqua Bank took the necessary steps to secure its system and then began working with outside cybersecurity specialists to determine the scope of the breach, including who was impacted and what data types were leaked.

The Umpqua Bank data breach, as well as many others involving the MOVEit managed file transfer software, involved a vulnerability that allowed hackers to access confidential information belonging to countless individuals. However, the vulnerability did not impact the IT systems of the companies that used MOVEit, and only affected data that was input into the program.

Umpqua Bank has not yet sent out data breach letters. However, once Umpqua Bank determines that customers or employees were impacted by the MOVEit breach, the company will send letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
