On October 30, 2023, United Medical Centers (“UMC”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Texas after discovering that an unauthorized party accessed and removed certain files from the company’s computer system. In this notice, UMC explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access patients’ sensitive information, which includes their names, dates of birth, mailing addresses, Social Security numbers, diagnosis and treatment information, and health insurance information. Upon completing its investigation, UMC began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the Data Breach Affecting United Medical Centers?

The United Medical Centers data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, UMC’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on July 26, 2023, UMC detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, UMC secured its systems, notified law enforcement and then began working with third-party data security specialists to investigate the incident.

On September 2, 2023, UMC’s investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed or removed some files from its computer systems. It was later determined that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential patient information.

After learning that sensitive patient data was accessible to an unauthorized party, United Medical Centers reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which patients were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, date of birth, mailing address, Social Security number, diagnosis and treatment information, and health insurance information.

In UMC’s October 30, 2023 letter, the company indicates that it sent out data breach letters on October 27, 2023. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
