On August 27, 2024, the United Services Automobile Association, better known as USAA, filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after discovering that an unauthorized party was able to access and view personal information belonging to certain customers. In this notice, USAA explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, addresses, email addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, vehicle identification numbers, loan numbers, health information, and property and casualty insurance policy information. Upon completing its investigation, USAA began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from USAA, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft, as well as discuss your legal options following the USAA data breach. What Caused the USAA Data Breach?

The USAA data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, USAA’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on April 30, 2024, USAA learned about a system error that had occurred during a “routine update.” Evidently, this error caused certain customers’ documents to be accessible by unauthorized users.

In response to learning about the incident, USAA removed the documents and then launched an investigation. On July 31, 2024, USAA confirmed that some customers’ confidential information was compromised.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, USAA reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, email address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver’s license number, passport number, vehicle identification number, loan numbers, health information, and property and casualty insurance policy information.

On August 27, 2024, USAA sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
