Pursuant to Utah state statute, the individual income tax return filing deadline will continue to mirror the Federal deadline (See news release here). According to Utah State Tax Commission (STC) Chair John Valentine, Utah thus automatically followed the IRS on Friday, and the deadlines for paying individual income tax and filing income tax returns due April 15, 2020 are extended to July 15, 2020.

The release does not contain specific details about the changes, noting that the STC is waiting to review the IRS’ official instruction to ensure proper alignment with the federal requirements.

In an earlier news release (here), the STC stated that, unlike the individual filing and payment deadlines, Utah corporate and pass-through entity returns would not be impacted by federal changes absent separate state legislative action. Utah offers an automatic six-month extension to file state tax returns.

We will continue to monitor Utah state tax developments.
