The Region 6 Office of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) announced in a May 30th news release that it awarded Arkansas $1,410,226 in grants to support certain state environmental programs.

EPA states that the grants will be targeted toward:

  • Improving water bodies ($821,775 to fund monitoring, standard-setting, establishment of improvement plans for waterways, and enforcement and compliance)
  • Implementing air-pollution control programs ($321,251 to fund updating mobile-source regulations, improving emissions data for modeling simulations, and operating an air monitoring network)
  • Enforcing drinking water standards ($267,100 to fund development of drinking water regulations, maintain an inventory/manage information and provide technical assistance to public drinking water systems, along with enforcement)

Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality Director Becky Keogh is quoted in the news release as stating in part:

These grants are a key source of funding for our implementation of federally delegated programs and represent in a tangible way our shared commitment to cooperative federalism.
