A discussion of Economic Justice, Racial Equity and Social Impact Investing with Mayor Aja Brown

Sponsored by the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee and the BRIDGE–Together Affinity Group

Mayor Aja Brown made history and quickly became a national trailblazer, elected at 31 as the youngest mayor to serve the City of Compton. She is an established leader, utilizing her expertise as an urban planner, economic developer and community servant. She quickly became known for her pragmatic 12-point Vision for Compton revitalization strategy, deploying evidence-based initiatives and attracting record levels of private sector reinvestment to Compton. She is a strong and relentless leader in the movement for social and racial justice, lending critical support to actionable policy changes. Mayor Brown joined forces with mayoral leaders across the country who are committed to guaranteed income, leading the movement with the launch of the Compton Pledge, the largest city-based guaranteed income program in the country. Mayor Brown has also focused her efforts on combating economic inequality, racial injustice and health equity in her community through public and private partnerships. The Compton Community Development Corporation, a firm client, is a new nonprofit venture spearheaded by Mayor Brown. She and a team of dedicated community leaders are utilizing the resurgence of our nation's attention on the needs of communities of color, to continue to catapult Compton forward with a focus on ground-breaking initiatives that address health, economic, social and racial equity issues.

Join Charlotte Partner Sabrina Conyers and Mayor Aja Brown of the City of Compton, California as they discuss some of the new initiatives that the City of Compton and the CCDC team are focused on and how the legal community can assist cities, localities, nonprofits and social impact-focused entities in implementing and facilitating plans for change. The CCDC NMRS team is led by Sabrina, and includes Richard Coaxum (Orlando, FL), Neil Grayson (Greenville, SC) and Kay Gordon (NY).
