Actual deception, substantial injury (including through AI), kids and teens, financial institutions and employees.
Those are the key enforcement priorities of the Federal Trade Commission when it comes to data privacy side, according to Chair Andrew N. Ferguson, who recently addressed the U.S. House Of Representative’s Committee on Appropriations’ Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government.
On Deceptive and Actually Unfair:
Where companies have misrepresented their data collection and use practices to consumers, or where data practices have caused substantial injury to consumers, the Commission has brought law enforcement actions. These actions include orders to ensure that the unlawful conduct will not occur again.
On Children, Teens and COPPA:
Protecting children and teens online is of paramount importance to the FTC.
On Employees:
American workers and small businesses are consumers too, and the Commission is taking a comprehensive approach — through enforcement and advocacy — to ensure that they are not held back by unfair or deceptive practices. In addition, the FTC recently launched a joint Labor Task Force across its bureaus and offices to protect American workers. The Task Force will work to prioritize rooting out and prosecuting deceptive, unfair and anticompetitive labor-market practices. Its efforts are already underway.
