On July 16, 2023, Wilton Reassurance Life Company of New York (“Wilton Re”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after confirming that confidential consumer information of 1,482,490 consumers was leaked due to a vendor’s use of a hacked secure file-transfer software. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names and Social Security numbers. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, Wilton Re began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Wilton Reassurance, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. Because this is a third-party data breach, the data breach letter may come from PBI Research Services or Progress Software, LLC. However, regardless of the company’s name on the letterhead, it doesn’t change the fact that your information was leaked. What We Know So Far About the Wilton Reassurance Breach

News of the Wilton Reassurance data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine. However, Wilton Re has not yet uploaded a sample data breach letter to the Maine AG’s site. That said, several other companies who do business with PBI Research Services (“PBI”) have reported similar breaches over the past few days.

Essentially, PBI is a company that provides death verification services to insurance companies, pension funds and other companies. Wilton Re is one of PBI’s customers. PBI uses the MOVEit secure file transfer software developed by Progress Software. On May 31, 2023, Progress reported that it discovered a previously unknown vulnerability in the MOVEit software which allowed hackers to download customer information. After this discovery, Progress Software informed PBI, which, in turn, informed Wilton Re of the breach.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Wilton Reassurance began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On June 16, 2023, Wilton Reassurance sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
