WebTPA Notifies Gerber Life Insurance Customers of April 2023 Data Breach

On April 26, 2024, WebTPA Employer Services, LLC filed a notice with the Attorney General of California after discovering that the company experienced a data breach affecting information belonging to Gerber Life Insurance Company (“Gerber Life”). In this notice, WebTPA explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access Gerber Life customers’ sensitive information. The Gerber Life / WebTPA Employer Services data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, WebTPA’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, WebTPA provides administrative services to benefit plans and insurance companies, including Gerber Life Insurance Company.

On December 23, 2023, WebTPA experienced unusual activity within its computer network. In response, WebTPA secured its systems and then launched an investigation to learn more about the incident. Ultimately, through this investigation, WebTPA learned that an unauthorized actor may have accessed or acquired personal information belonging to Gerber Life customers between April 18, 2023 and April 23, 2023. WebTPA then promptly informed Gerber Life about the incident.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, WebTPA Employer Services reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. WebTPA completed this process on March 27, 2024.

On April 26, 2024, WebTPA Employer Services sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. While the publicly available data breach letter does not indicate what data types were leaked as a result of the cyberattack, the personalized letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
